Laura Knight | The Nuremberg Trial, 1946

At the end of the war Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) proposed to the War Artists' Advisory Committee the Nuremberg war crimes trials as a subject. The Committee agreed and Dame Laura Knight went to Germany in January 1946 and spent three months observing the trials from inside the courtroom. The result was the large oil painting, The Nuremberg Trial.
This painting departs from the realism of her earlier wartime paintings, in that whilst realistically depicting the Nazi war criminals sitting in the dock during their trial, the rear and side walls of the courtroom are missing to reveal a ruined city, partially in flames.

Knight explained this choice of composition in a letter to the War Artists' Advisory Committee,

"In that ruined city death and destruction are ever present. They had to come into the picture, without them, it would not be the Nuremberg as it now is during the trial, when the death of millions and utter devastation are the sole topics of conversation wherever one goes – whatever one is doing".

The painting was coolly received at the subsequent Royal Academy Summer Exhibition but was greatly praised by those who had witnessed the trials.

Pierre Chevassu has a personal way of representing women a symbolic subjects. The smoothness of their faces their sweetness, often reflecting beautiful eyes, neat hair, all worked in a colourful way, giving Chevassu paintings an elegance and great gentleness.
These women, with their timeless, enigmatic faces, the looks and secret thoughts which seem to defy time, explain Chevassu’s passion and success with his public. Chevassu has won numerous awards and currently has several permanent exhibitions both in France and Canada.

Eternal, intemporal, fascinating, beautiful and attractive, those are the adjectives one must use to describe Pierre Chevassu’s muses. Never quite the same, never quite different, his women are soulful and seem to be very in touch with their femininity.
This French artist has been working for over 20 years, participating in the greatest Parisian salons, as well as in many exhibits in foreign lands.

He paints portraits of women, symbolizing them in a thousand ways, but always with fine faces and striking beauty. His rich, elegant and enigmatic paintings have won him several first prizes as well as great admiration from art lovers.
One would think that the unique theme of his paintings could end up being repetitive; on the contrary, one discovers in fact that the variety of his works is infinite and neverending. This amazing feat is obviously due to the creative genius of the artist, who seems to be holding in between his fingers a brush so thin and supple that it becomes almost impossible to see the brushstrokes on the varnished canvas.
His backgrounds are intricate and colourful, giving to his artwork an elegance and a touch of richness and softness that cannot be imitated; Pierre Chevassu’s works are now included in the collections of the most serious and discriminating buyers.
He can be classified as a great contemporary painter of women, portraying them intensely with beauty and passion. The artist exhibits throughout Europe, Canada and the United States.

Rick Reinert's formal art education took place in the early 1970's at Western Kentucky University. His arts education continued to evolve over the years, and he exhibited large, expressionistic works in one-man shows throughout Germany and Canada.
After his initial success, Reinert took time off to establish two small businesses and to raise his family. Through a series of circumstances related to his business, Reinert became a highly visable and vocal proponent of campaign finance reform, and was the subject of a number of articles including a cover story in Time Magazine in Feb. 2000. During this time, his commitment to painting was renewed, and he began creating art again. He painted through the night and slowly established the unique and passionate style that he is known for today.

Painting seven days a week, 9 hours a day, Reinert continues to challenge himself as one of America's most prolific painters.

This dedication and hard work has paid off, and his paintings have won accolades across the country.

Ships of the Heartland' was chosen in 2008 as one the top 100 paintings in the “Paint America” competition, and “Southern Radiance” was chosen as one of the top 200 paintings in the “Oil Painters of America” Exhibition held in Montana in that same year. In February 2009, he was the subject of a cover story in the Sunshine Artist magazine. Reinert was chosen as a featured artist at the Gadsden Museum of Art Southeastern Plein Air Competition held in Gadsden, Alabama, and was featured for the eight time in November, 2014 in American Art Collector Magazine.

Throughout his career Reinert has won numerous Best of Show awards including first, second, third, as well as the People’s Choice Awards. In 2012 his painting “Dusk at King and Queen” was chosen “Best of Show, Mayors Purchase Award” at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition.
Reinert was also the featured artist at the Charleston Symphony live auction in 2012 and his work hangs in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Sergio Cozzuol, 1941 | Venice painting

Italian painter Sergio Cozzuol was born in Pola in 1941 and later moved to Genoa. He began his studies under the guide of Professor Giuseppe Rigon, a famous scenographer at “La Scala”, the opera theatre in Milan. Then he attended the School of Arts in Vicenza, northern Italy, with Professors Giuseppe De Pellegrini and Otello De Maria. Sergio Cozzuol paints miniatures on precious materials such as gold, ivory or copper paying great attention even to the smallest detail. His work seems to date back to 18th century; he uses soft tones which can be suddenly enlightened by a ray of sun or obscured by the grey and foggy skies of the northern towns. Indeed, he can be considered a follower of Impressionism, a movement of the 1860s.

Impressionist painters are fascinated by the relationship between light and colour, painting in pure pigment using free brushstrokes. They are also radical in their choice of subject matter, avoiding traditional, historical, religious themes to concentrate on landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Portofino, Venice, the lake district in the north of Italy, mountain resorts or northern European cities are the settings of his paintings.
He stages personal shows all over the world, mostly in Europe where he largely obtained the attention of the critics.

Exhibitions: 1963 Galleria d’arte Otto, Vienna 1965 Galleria d’arte Rossines, Paris 1967 Galleria d’arte Salomons, New York 1970 Galleria d’arte Ars Italica, Milano 1973 Galleria d’arte Italart, Stoccarda 1977 Galleria d’arte Schwicker, Firenze 1981 Galleria d’arte Arte Gallery, Roma 1987 Galleria d’arte Rupis, Chelles, France 1993/2002 Galleria d’arte Portofino, Portofino.

Attualmente vive e lavora a Genova.

New Orleans painter Betsy Brown is delighting us for years. Her unique ability for diversity is part of her large appeal. She can take us to the quaint towns of Yarmouth and Asheville with their sense of family heritage. Betsy brings us to the sultry streets of New Orleans where one can almost hear the mellow sounds of Carmen Leggio’s tenor sax. Alluring European landscapes capture our eyes with the way she creates the magic of distance and the penetrating effect of color and light.

Perhaps it is her attention to detail or the broader effect. Whatever the reason, what touches Betsy personally seems to affect so many others drawn to her work.

Haddon Hubbard | Pin-up painter

Haddon Hubbard "Sunny" Sundblom (June 22, 1899 - March 10, 1976) was a Finnish  illustrator and American artist best known for the images of Santa Claus he created for The Coca-Cola Company.

Sundblom was born in Muskegon, Michigan to a Swedish-speaking family. His father, Karl Wilhelm Sundblom, came from the farm Norrgårds in the village of Sonboda in Föglö of the Swedish-speaking part of Åland Islands, then part of the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland now Finland, and his mother Karin Andersson was from Sweden. Sundblom studied at the American Academy of Art.

Sundblom is best remembered for his advertising work, specifically the Santa Claus advertisements he painted for The Coca-Cola Company in the 1930s. Sundblom's Claus firmly established the larger-than-life, grandfatherly Claus as a key figure in American Christmas imagery. So popular were Sundblom's images of Claus (Sundblom's images are used by Coca-Cola to this day) that Sundblom is often credited has having created the modern image of Santa Claus.

According to the Coca-Cola company: "For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). Moore's description of St. Nick led to an image of Santa that was warm, friendly, pleasantly plump and human. For the next 33 years, Sundblom painted portraits of Santa that helped to create the modern image of Santa – an interpretation that today lives on in the minds of people of all ages, all over the world".
Sundblom also conceived Coke's mascot Sprite Boy who appeared in print ads during the 1940s and 1950s.
Sundblom is recognized as a major influence on many well known pin-up artists, such as Gil Elvgren, Edward Runci, Joyce Ballantyne, Art Frahm, and Harry Ekman. In the mid-1930s, he began to paint pin-ups and glamour pieces for calendars. Sundblom's last assignment, in 1972, was a cover painting for Playboy's Christmas issue.
"Sundblom gets pigeonholed as the painter of Coca-Cola Santa Clauses, but this trivializes his central place in 20th century advertising art. More than any artist including Norman Rockwell, Sundblom defined the American Dream in pictures, proved by his work for virtually the entire Fortune 500".

Haddon Hubbard Sundblom studiò arte all'Art Institute of Chicago e all'American Academy of Art.

I take Inspiration from what I see around me, but my personal thoughts are only the starting point and inspiration for the research on the man and his condition”.

Anna Wypych’s works of art transcend the commonplace, to enter the realm of the otherworldly. The starting point of her work and also the main theme, is always a man, but Anna Wypych goes beyond physicality, as if she wants more to capture the spirit, than the body. She develops images that evoke moods, dreams, and feelings inspired by real life, and which create a remarkably compelling narrative.
The physical nudity and sincerity of her characters has emerged as a hallmark of her work. She explores philosopical questions, for which we do not have time in our quick, busy everyday life. She use her own language of symblos and gestures, to show seeking, to understand the place of the human in modern world.

The people in her paintings are not particular persons, but figures of concepts and ideas, she paints rather portraits of feelings. Our gaze transcends the picture plane and permeates deep into the subject’s psyche. She seeks essence of humanity. She believes that letting ourselves explore our doubts, existential questions, seemingly meaningless thinking about cases, which are somewhere on the border of consciousness, is part of what gives us balance and sens.

Anna Wypych recived her MFA from Academy of Fine Art in Gdansk, Poland in 2011. During her studies she received eight national awards from the Ministry of Culture, the Marshal of the Pomeranian and the Mayor of Gdansk. Wypych won a Grand Prix in the national contest “Artistic Journey of Hestia” in 2010 and as a result she spent a month in New York City.

She was also awarded “Pomeranian Artistic Hope 2011″ Gdansk, Poland and Certificate of Exellence, Palm Art Award 2012, Germany.

Wypych’s painting is included to permament collection of The European Museum of Modern Art, MEAM, Barcelona Spain.

She presented her works at various juried exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including: "BP Portrait Award 2014", The National Portrait Gallery London, The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens Sunderland, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, Aberystwyth Arts Centre; "Modportrait 2014" Fundation Bantierra, Zaragroza, The European Museum of Modern Art, Barcelona, Spain, and "Women Painting Women 2014" Principle Gallery Charleston, SC USA.

Bruno Catalano, 1960 | Symbolist / Surrealist sculptor | Public Art

Bruno Catalano (Khouribga, 1960) is a French sculptor, most renown for creating sculptures of figures with substantial sections missing.
Originally from Morocco, Bruno is the third and last child of a Sicilian family. In 1970 the Catalano family left Morocco for France. In 1982 he started working at the Société Nationale maritime Corse Méditerranée. He stayed there 4 years until 1986. He cites his experience as a sailor as central to his inspiration.

Catalano was acquainted with sculpting in 1981 in Marseille where he enrolled in Françoise Hamel’s modeling classes. After two years of education, he opened his own art practise in 1985 and secured an oven in which he would bake his first clay figure. Later Catalano began to make big bronze sculptures. His first works were compact and conventional but the later series become increasingly expressive. In 2004 a flaw in one of his characters - a depiction of Cyrano - prompted him to dig and hollow out the chest. A new path of work ensues. An exhibition took place in Marseille in September 2013, to celebrate its status as the European Capital of Culture with ten life-size sculptures exhibited at the port of Marseille.

John Singer Sargent in the Early 1880

Sargent once described Italian artist Antonio Mancini (1853-1930) as "the best living painter".
During the 1870s, Mancini regularly visited Paris, where his friends included novelist Paul Bourget and Sargent himself, who is said to have "accompanied him everywhere".

The friendship between Mancini and Sargent continued in the early 1880s in Rome, where Mancini lived following a nervous breakdown.

Sophie Morisse, 1962 | Magic Realism painter

Sophie Morisse was born in 1962 to Mers-les-Bains (France). Live at present in Haute-Normandie. She has studied during five years in the School of Fine Arts of Rouen, until 1987. His professor was then the painter and a sculptor Philippe Garel. Received the Prize of the city of Poitiers and that of Saint Grégoire in 2001. The same year, the birth of her daughter Thaïs, first name of Egyptian origin. Expose in whole France, in particular in Paris region and in Giverny, Metz, Rouen, Nantes …

Sophie Morisse paints characters seeming to go out of a play or of a tale. Her models put on disguises, play the comedy, revealing outstanding postures which the artist seizes in the oil.
Sophie Morisse shares her vast studio of 80 m² with her companion, the painter of figurative art Marc Lemoine, who met in the Beaux-arts school at the beginning of the 1980’s. "We work in the same studio, it is easy to us because we always worked like this". In this common room, Sophie Morisse accumulates numerous paintings. She placed her easel near to a furniture where she tidies her tubes and gasolines. We notice on a chair a pallet with an impressive thickness of paint. "It is right-hander’s pallet and I am left-handed, I have to put it. It nevertheless has been twenty five years which I use it … and since I do not clean it! ».

The artist makes the shuttle between the pallet and his easel on an armchair on casters which also allows her to set the distance with her canvas. In a cornerof the studio, an impressive cupboard contains a multitude of disguises and accessories of all kinds: derby hat, a top hat , gloves, wigs …
"My models play a role, I paint them in a theatrical way to take out them of their everyday life. I like making them take little usual attitudes. As it is the case for the actors, costumes help them to to get into their role. The false noses for example (with whom Sophie Morisse developed a series of paintings),obliged the models to take a particular posture because this accessory have to can hold without elastic. Their head carriage is thus modified".
This attraction for costumes is logically understandable: her mother was a dresser, Sophie Morisse thus spent a large part of his childhood on film sets.
Among his other childhood memories having led her to become a painter, Sophie Morisse reminds himself visits to the Musée du Louvre. "My father took me there regularly when I was 8-10 years old. This is when I decided on a future in the paint. I had an album of postables cards of my favourite paintings". In this collection of images, we found Le Jeune mendiant of Murillo, "a picture which I always admire", or still David’s paintings "certainly because of shells and bare men", she makes fun.
Almost in the same period, her aunt Nadine offers her first box of oil paint. The rising artist begins by realizing self-portraits, she is 13-year-old. "I was my first model. At least, I always was here", she smiles. "I held the mirror in a hand, and painted with the other one. But it was not easy because I am nearsighted and I wanted to reflect without glasses!"
The tales and Sophie Morisse’s paint got married and lived hapilly ever after … Here is a happier outcome! Tom Thumb, Donkey Skin of Perrault, The lLittle Mermaid of Andersen, Alice in Wonderland of Carroll … So many stories which inspire the rouennaise artist and engender atypical paintings. The imagination of the tale, at the same time magic and disturbing, shows through her character. We do not know if we have to be afraid of the crazy Hatter or laugh; we admire dresses of Donkey Skin as much as we are afraid of the consequences if she wear it … This dichotomy is present in all her work. We also find her in the use of brilliant but terrible animals especially when groups: batrachians, butterflies, dragonflies, birds … The immediate entourage of the artist, friends, family, gladly enter into the spirit of the game of the pose. The model returning most of the time is her 12-year-old daughter, Thaïs. "I do not want to paint her portrait in particular, but rather to represent the childhood generally, and more widely the human face, two essential components of my work".
Sophie Morisse organizes short sessions of pose where she takes photos and realizes various sketches. "It would be impossible to me to pose my daughter for hours!" To paint the details of clothes, the artist gets models of sewing on whom she arranges costumes.
At the moment, she prepares an exhibition putting on the opposite page her paintings with the work of a corset-maker rouennais (Sophie Morisse collects corsets).
Her second intention consists of the realization of a series of paintings with some paper crystal which is usually of use to the florists. "The characters wind the face inside, creating sets of transparency". Two projects already between her brushes.
