Erich Fried / Igor Mitoraj | Non so cosa sia l'amore / I don’t know what love is..

$

Non so cosa sia l'amore
ma forse
è qualcosa come:
e ho nostalgia
di ascoltarla
ripetere queste parole
e poi che pronunciandole
mi appaia esattamente come quando le
pronunciò-
E' forse questo, penso, l'amore
o qualcosa di non molto diverso...

A trifle

for Catherine
I don’t know what love is
but perhaps
it is something like this:
When she
come home from abroad
and tells me proudly: “I sawa water rat”and I remember these words
when I wake up in the night
and next day at my work 10
and I long
to hear her say
the same words once more
and for her
to look exactly the same
as she looked
when she said them –
I think that is maybe love
or something rather like it

Mike Wise, 1973 | Plein Air painter

Mike Wise is an Impressionist oil painter best known for his landscapes. His approach to representational art is based in abstract design with loose brushwork and sculptural smears of the palette knife bringing movement and energy to a piece. The intended result is a painting rich in color and texture with a distinct three-dimensional feel that draws the viewer deep into the painted image.

Mike works in what was once an old barn that he converted to a modern art studio. The natural beauty that surrounds him at home on Whidbey Island, as well as having his family around and a lot of good music in the studio while he paints, influences his creative process.

Wise is a member of Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Impressionist Society (AIS).

Jeanne Saint Chéron, 1973 | Symbolist Figurative painter

Born in Laval Loire Valley, Jeanne Saint-Chéron has been successful for over fifteen years.
In the beginning of her career, a self taught painter Saint Chéron participates to riding competitions and invests in racing horses breeding. Then she decides to move to Brittany, France, where she teaches drawing and painting for more than ten years. However, her main occupation remains painting and participating to various art exhibitions. In 2006, Saint Chéron decides to dedicate all of her time to her artwork and suspends her teaching activities, in spite of the fact that more than hundred students participated to her art workshops during the last teaching year.

From 1995 onwards, encouraged by several successful exhibitions, national awards and a growing popularity, Saint Chéron decides to make a further step towards her dream: she moves her art studio to Normandy, a beautiful French region which provides all the equine-related inspiration she needs for her creations.
She holds equine art exhibitions in local galleries and participates to a number of regional group exhibitions. As a result, some of her work is acquired and shown by private collectors abroad. She recently made a permanent agreement with ARCY Gallery in Dubai, which has signed up the exclusive right to present Saint Chéron’s horses in art.
With her graphical and colourful palette, the artist explores and depicts the mythical horse, not because of the animal’s graceful attitudes or apparent submission to the rider, but because of its fiery, its sudden gallops, its unexpected crazes and panic-stricken rear ups.
Saint Chéron is a member of the Paris Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters and a member of the Taylor Foundation. In April 2007, she receives the Silver Award from the French Association of Arts, Sciences and Letters.

David Garrett (born David Christian Bongartz; 4 September 1980) is a record-breaking German pop and crossover violinist and recording artist.
  • Personal life
Garrett was born in Aachen, Germany, to an American prima ballerina, Dove Garrett, and a German jurist, Georg Bongartz. He adopted his mother's maiden name as his stage name, as "it was more pronounceable".

  • Musical education
When Garrett was four years old his father bought a violin for his older brother. The young Garrett took an interest and soon learned to play. A year later, he took part in a competition and won first prize. By the age of seven, he studied violin at the Lübeck Conservatoire, and by the age of 12, Garrett began working with the distinguished Polish violinist Ida Haendel, often traveling to London and other European cities to meet her. After leaving home at 17, he enrolled at the Royal College of Music in London, leaving after the first semester.
On being asked in an interview in 2008 if he was expelled, Garrett responded: "Well, expelled wasn't the official term… It was mutually agreed that me and the RCM were going separate ways after the first semester. I did skip some lessons – but I also broke in to do extra practice, so that didn't help!

In 1999 he moved to New York to attend the Juilliard School, in 2003 winning the School’s Composition Competition with a fugue composed in the style of Johann Sebastian Bach. Whilst at Juilliard he studied under Itzhak Perlman, one of the first people to do so, and graduated in 2004.
Garrett attended the Keshet Eilon Masterclasses in Israel in the summers of 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002.
  • Career
Garrett received his first Stradivarius violin at the age of 11, courtesy of German president Richard von Weizsäcker, after having performed for him.
At the age of 13, Garrett recorded two CDs, appeared on German and Dutch television, and gave a concert in the residence of the President of Germany, the Villa Hammerschmidt, at Dr. von Weizsäcker’s personal invitation. He was offered the use of the famous Stradivarius "San Lorenzo" which is among the best instruments of Antonio Stradivari’s "golden period".
At the age of 13, as the youngest soloist ever, Garrett signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. In April 1997, age 16, he played with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta in Delhi and Mumbai in concerts marking the 50th anniversary of India’s Independence.
Two years later, Garrett played with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and was hailed by critics. This led to an invitation to perform at Expo 2000 in Hanover. At the age of 21, he was invited to perform at the BBC Proms.
While studying at the Juilliard, Garrett supplemented his income by working as a model.
Garrett's 2008 album Encore pursues an aim of arousing young people’s interest in classical music. The release contains his own compositions and arrangements of pieces and melodies that have accompanied him in his life so far. Together with his band, consisting of keyboard, guitar and drums, he gives concerts that include classical sonatas (accompanied by a concert grand piano), arrangements, and compositions, as well as rock songs and movie themes.
In Autumn 2007, Garrett was chosen by the Montegrappa firm (whose items are distributed by Montblanc throughout the world) as an ambassador for the launch of the new pens from the Tributo ad Antonio Stradivari collection. The event took place in several venues, including in Rome, New York, Hong Kong, Berlin, and London. For these occasions Garrett was offered a Stradivarius from the Gli Archi di Palazzo Comunale collection.
He also appeared at the Royal Variety Performance on 5 December 2011, playing his cover of Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
He joined the 9th annual Independent Music Awards judging panel to assist independent musicians' careers.
His most recent album, Music, was released in 2012. On 19 May 2012 he appeared at the UEFA Champions League Final performing with German singer Jonas Kaufmann. For 2014 he announced a new Crossover Tour.
He played the lead role in the 2013 movie The Devil's Violinist, as the noted 19th-century violinist Niccolò Paganini.

Philip Jackson, 1944 | Abstract /Impressionist sculptor | Public Art

"My sculptures are essentially an impressionistic rendering of the figure. Where you see the figure seemingly grow out of the ground, the texture resembles tree bark, rock, or lava flow. As the eye moves up the sculpture, the finish becomes gentler and more delicately worked, culminating in the hands and the mask, both of which are precisely observed and modeled".

Philip Henry Christopher Jackson is a renowned sculptor with an outstanding international reputation.
His ability to convey the human condition through skilful use of body language is legendary, producing figures both imposing and operatic in their narrative and presence, which are recognizable worldwide.

Philip Jackson The Young Mozart

Powerful and beautifully sculpted, Jackson's meticulously precise posturing of each piece creates an overwhelming sense of drama. Whether with the prestigious, figuratively detailed public monuments and statues for which he is often commissioned, or his hauntingly elegant and theatrically enigmatic gallery sculptures, Philip Jackson's work is truly awe inspiring - it never fails to move people.
Born in Inverness, Jackson now lives and works in West Sussex. He was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the Queen's Birthday Honours list 2009.

Eric Roux-Fontaine was born in the Savoy Region of France. He enrolled at the Fine Art School of Saint-Etienne at the young age of 17 and graduated Summa Cum Laude 5 years later. Since his first solo exhibition in 1991, he has enjoyed sellout shows and overwhelming success throughout Europe. In 1995, the Musée des Beaux-arts of the city of Chambéry and the Musée Paul Dini of the city of Villefranche-sur-Saône acquired works which to date are part of their permanent collections.

The Museum of the city of Lyon and the Centre de Cultura Contemporania of Barcelona (Barcelona Contemporary Arts Center) both featured his work in 2008. The same year, Spanish private arts foundation Josep Niebla presented his first retrospective. In 2011, he was a guest speaker at the renowned TED event in Lyon. His work was recently featured at the Rotterdam, Paris, London and Dublin art fairs. His studio is now in Lyon, France but he spends a great deal of time gathering inspiration for his work by traveling internationally.
His multi-media body of work is largely inspired by his travels throughout Central America, India and Eastern Europe, specifically to Borucan and Romani communities. He is artistically inspired by historical greats such as Eugene Delacroix as well as contemporary painters, such as Peter Doig and Miquel Barceló. He likens his dreamlike perception of the world to literature by Alejo Carpentier, João Guimarães Rosa and the poet Tsigane Rajko Djuric and films by visionaries such as Serbian Emir Kusturica, German Wim Wenders and American Jim Jarmusch.

Aert van der Neer | Dutch Baroque Era painter

Aert van der Neer, Aert also called Aernout (born 1603/04, Gorinchem [also called Gorkum, or Gorcum] or Amsterdam, Netherlands - died November 9, 1677, Amsterdam) Dutch painter of the Baroque period, famous for his nocturnal landscapes and winter scenes. His mastery of light effects is revealed in his many darkened landscapes lit by a full moon or a burning building as well as by his sensitivity to the appearance of light on water and ice.

According to one of his earliest biographers, Arnold Houbraken, van der Neer worked as a steward for some years while living in or near Gorinchem. During this period he may have studied painting with Rafel Govertszoon Camphuijsen (Camphuysen), one of his wife Lysbeth’s older brothers.
Whatever the case, van der Neer did not begin his painting career until he was in his late 20s; his first known work, a genre painting, is dated 1632, the year in which he is believed to have moved (or moved back) to Amsterdam. An early landscape contains van der Neer’s signature as well as that of another artist brother-in law, Jochem. (The works of both brothers-in-law are often mistaken for those of van der Neer, but most scholars consider them inferior.) Van der Neer’s work exhibits the influence of a Flemish landscape tradition known to art historians as the Frankenthal school, represented chiefly by Gillis van Coninxloo.
Characteristic features of that school are the use of a limited tonal palette, the depiction of winding paths that lead the eye, and the presentation of isolated figures.

Apart from a number of accomplished winter scenes-such as View of the River in Winter in the manner of Hendrik Avercamp (1585-1634), who was among the first northern Dutch painters of winter scenes-van der Neer specialized in canal and river landscapes seen by the light of sunset or early dawn or-most characteristic of all-by moonlight, as in River Scene by Moonlight. Within this somewhat limited range, van der Neer had no rival among his contemporaries. His sensitive handling of subdued light and its reflections on water and in the windows of riverside houses is unequaled. Scholars agree that he was at the height of his powers from the mid-1640s to about 1660.

He seems not to have had much financial success as a painter, however, and about 1658 or 1659 he opened a wine tavern, De Graeff van Hollant, in Kalverstraat with his son Jan. This venture ended in bankruptcy in 1662. Living in poverty, van der Neer is believed to have continued to paint, for he is described as a painter in the inventory that was made of the few belongings he possessed at the time of his death. His son Eglon van der Neer (c. 1634–1703) was also a painter, and some paintings have also been attributed to the aforementioned son Jan.

Lotta Blokker, 1980 | Figurative sculptor

When Lotta Blokker (Amsterdam 1980) first encountered the work of the french sculptor Auguste Rodin, during a secondary school excursion to the Musée Rodin in Paris, Lotta Blokker felt that her destiny had been determined. "This is it", she thought, looking at Rodin’s works. At the age of nineteen she travelled to Italy to study sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art.
Her talent was obvious and she started teaching even before she had graduated. The programme had a strong focus on learning the technique of sculpting. Observing, interpreting, drawing, modelling: the hand should follow the eye.

The high points of the history of the art of sculpture can be seen in Lotta Blokker’s works: from the Venus of Milo via Donatello’s Mary Magdalene to The Thinker by Auguste Rodin. But she also takes work by the great painters such as Vincent van Gogh, Lucian Freud and Marlene Dumas and translates them into sculptures. What all these examples from art history have in common with Blokker is a powerful and sensitive oeuvre that captivate and enchant the viewing public.
Her work can be found in private collections from Europe to the United States and is regularly featured in international exhibitions. | Ralph Keuning (director of Museum de Fundatie) and Karin van Lieverloo (curator at Museum de Fundatie).

The Polish-born artist Małgorzata Chodakowska ☞ works primarily in wood and bronze and is well known for the seductive balance of her figures.
But, she doesn't just stop there…
Małgorzata Chodakowska ☞ creates unusual statues, which bring water and bronze together to form spectacular fountains. Initially, she carves the statue from a large oak trunk, forming the general shape she wishes to create. As Małgorzata carves away layer by layer, the large pieces of wood transform into magnificent statues.

Jules Tavernier (27 April 1844 - 18 May 1889) was a French painter, illustrator, and an important member of Hawaii’s Volcano School.
He was born on 27 April 1844 in Paris. He studied with the French painter, Félix Joseph Barrias (1822-1907, but left France in the 1870s, never to return. Tavernier was employed as an illustrator by Harper's Magazine, which sent him, along with Paul Frenzeny, on a year-long coast-to-coast sketching tour in 1873. Eventually, he continued westward to Hawaii, where he made a name for himself as a landscape painter. He was fascinated by Hawaii’s erupting volcanoes-a subject that was to pre-occupy him for the rest of his life, which was spent in Hawaii, Canada and the western United States. Tavernier died on 18 May 1889 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

His students included D. Howard Hitchcock (1861-1943), Amédée Joullin (1862-1917), Charles Rollo Peters (1862-1917) and Manuel Valencia (1856-1935).
Among the public collections holding paintings by Jules Tavernier are the Brigham Young University Museum of Art (Provo, UT), the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (Colorado Springs, CO), the Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento), the Gilcrease Museum (Tulsa, OK), Hearst Art Gallery (Saint Mary's College of California, Moraga, CA), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Museum of Nebraska Art (Kearney, NE), the Oakland Museum of California, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Stark Museum of Art (Orange, TX), the Society of California Pioneers (San Francisco, CA), the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (Hagerstown, MD) and the Yosemite Museum (Yosemite National Park).
In 2014 the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California held an exhibition of more than 100 works by Tavernier, the first career retrospective of his work, accompanied by a catalog entitled Jules Tavernier: Artist and Adventurer. After the Crocker, the exhibition moved to the Monterey Museum of Art.
